A celebration was held on April 20th, 285 people registered to be hosts for this years, Great Cloth Diaper Change (GCDC) in 17 different countries around the world! This year was Bitty Bambino’s first time hosting this amazing event, local moms and dads started to arrive around 10:30 waiting for the 11am buzzer to change those cloth bums. Everyone was welcomed with a goodie bag that included a free magazine subscription, Bamboobies, and some great coupons just to name a few. The Great Cloth Diaper Change is an event that happens all over the world to help break last year’s record, also promoting how fun and easy it is using cloth diapers!
To qualify for this event we had to follow the Guinness World Record guidelines, which stated we had to have 25 participants to be included in the final count, babies must be less than 39 inches and all babies had to be changed into a cloth diaper that was able to be purchased either online or in a brick and mortar. We had 11 people pre-register and 5 “walk-ins” which gave us a total of 16, although we didn’t make the minimum of 25 everyone still had a great time, there was lots of new faces, a wee one that was a mere 6 weeks old, lots of chit chat about different kinds of cloth diapers and even a brand new member to the cloth diaper world! Which is the whole purpose behind this event to bring more awareness to cloth diapering and show people it really isn’t that hard nor time consuming.
I was so nervous that we wouldn’t have a good turnout but everything went without a hitch! Almost everyone walked away with some fantastic giveaways that were donated by local businesses and mompreneurs. We were also very lucky to have a great photographer to provide us and capture the fun that was taking place (Cassie Vosburgh Photography).
Although we fell short of the 25 participants our number will still go towards the unofficial count for the world record. As the organizers are winding down from the excitement of Saturdays events, so far the unofficial count is at 6,509 with only half of the hosts reporting in so far, last year’s total was 8,251.
Raising awareness, and teaching our children on how we need to take care of our planet is so important, with Earth hour being March 23rd, Earth Day being April 22nd, and having the GCDC is definitely a step in the right direction with more and more people around the world participating, I have hope that we will make a change.
Although these events are one day, it’s a great way to show us that we need to keep making changes in our lives, let’s teach our children that we need to be doing these things daily. My goal for my family is to pick an activity to do weekly such as picking up garbage in the ditches around our house, making sure to turn out the lights when not in the room, have more candle lit dinners, and have a treasure hunt using flash lights. Please visit www.earthday.ca for ways you can make a difference every day, and fun family activities every little bit helps.
