I’ve always dreamed of being an excellent baker. I come from a family that “heats baked goods” rather than bakes from scratch. I was determined to learn this foreign concept of baking and when recipes started appearing on the internet, I was in heaven. However, it is nice to have a collection of your favorite recipe books to teach you the art of baking. There is just so much to know!
We love books by Robert Rose as they have so many recipe books to choose from. Right now, we have just gone through Buttercream Basics: The Art of Buttercream Decorating by Carey Madden. Carey was also the author of Sensational Buttercream Decorating which we are going to get our hands on next!
A big part of baking after taste is presentation so we wanted to master buttercream, an essential form of making a cake look like a show stopper.
We trusted Carey Madden because she owns Violet, a custom cake and cookie bakery specializing in handcrafted seasonal buttercream cakes and decorated cookies using local and organic ingredients. I was excited to get my hands on this book.
I thought starting with Buttercream Basics was the best bet. I have picked up on little tips here and there but I wanted to be a good buttercream decorator and I am so glad I did. There are DOZENS of delicious design options in this book with over 360 step-by-step photos. It was time for me to have my cake and eat it too.

I felt like I was costarring in Julie and Julia, should I be like Julie in the movie and try every recipe over a time period? Why not! I completed quite a few recipes and tried a lot of designs but I have more to complete. Most of all, I made memories with my small daughter as we baked our way through cake decorating. Neighbors and friends alike would pop by for some delicious treats.
I love how detailed this book was! You can be a beginner or have a few tricks up your sleeve in the art of buttercream and still learn a lot from this book! The pictures are gorgeous, it’s no wonder why Carey Madden is so sought after. Also, the pictures are detailed, accounting for everything that you need.
Learn about the different types of buttercream, borders and inscriptions, different decorating techniques and more! We also loved the “Dear Abby section” where Carey gives such great advice to other novice bakers that have experienced some challenges. This book is not only going to teach you how to make delicious buttercream, but to decorate for everything from a children’s birthday to a beautiful party. Your friends will be asking you to bring one of your delicious buttercream cakes to every party and potluck.
I had such a great time with Buttercream Basics that I will be avidly looking for Carey Madden books from now on. Join me in making delicious fresh butter cream cakes!
