Newborns sleep for the most part of the day. However, that is never in one take, so be ready for some sleepless nights. This period of babies’ sleeping habit is important for their brains to develop properly, and it does not last that long. After those few weeks, if you want for your baby to have a healthy sleeping routine, you should start early and consider a few things.
Create a calming environment
Just like most of the adults, babies need a calm and quiet place for sleeping. Their crib needs to have a firm but comfy mattress so the baby’s back would be straight. The room has to be at a comfortable temperature, so your child would not get too cold or too hot during the night. Also, they should not sleep in a pitch-black room. So they would not wake up screaming every time, leave a night light on, but facing directly into the baby. The room simply has to give away a nice protective atmosphere.
Learn the signs of getting sleepy
For the first seven weeks your child will have a routine of sleeping every two hours. For this routine to be healthy and to teach the baby to sleep through the most part of the night you have to know his sings of getting tired. Babies tend to rub their eyes when sleepy, to whine and cry at the slightest provocations or to yawn and stretch a lot. Also, if they develop faint dark circles under their eyes or easily lose interest in people and toys it means it is sleepy time. When you spot any of these little nap hints, gently put him in his comfortable warm baby sleeping bag for a good healthy nap.
Get ready for bed
For acquiring a good routine, your child needs to learn the signs and activities that is time for bed. First, you can start with letting your child to let off some steam and use up all the energy before putting them down. After that, take a nice warm bath to relax their body and get them ready for bed. Also, you do not want your child to go to bed hungry, so feed them with a bottle of warm milk or breastfeed. Finally, put them in their crib and read a book together or sing them a nice lullaby. By repeating these activities every day, your baby’s body will, through time, learn those hints and they will fall asleep more easily.
Some sounds can help
Not every sound is welcoming to the ear, especially if you are a baby. Since newborns are still new to everything around them, even the slightest noise can wake them up. However, there are some noises that babies actually enjoy. Firstly, you may want to try with some pleasant low-volume music. If that does not work, then turn to help from whooshing sounds. Turn on a fan (without facing it directly to the baby) and the gentle humming sound will calm your child down. Also, white-noise machines are popular for their calming effect on some babies and even adults. This could also become a part of bed time routine and teach your baby when it is time to relax and sleep.
By following these and more other tricks and steps, you will develop a healthy sleeping routine. It will help both your baby and you to have a good night sleep and be well-rested.
